29 October 2020 Master Chief Newsom is a native of Alabama and 1991 graduate of Carthage High School in Carthage, Mississippi.    He entered the Army National Guard in 1990, completed basic, and Combat Engineer (12b) training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.  In 1991, he requested a conditional release and approved for transfer to the United States Navy.   In December of 1991, he completed basic training at Recruit Training Center Orlando, Florida.  Following recruit training; he reported to Mess Management “A” school in San Diego, CA. 

His sea duty assignments include USS LASALLE (AGF 3), USS PONCE (LPD 15), USS LABOON (DDG 58), USS BARRY (DDG 52), USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD 41), and  USS MESA VERDE (LPD 19) where he deployed twice to 5th and 6th Fleet, completing an historic 321–day deployment.  His first Command Master Chief tour was with the “Shadows” of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron FOUR at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Master Chief’s shore assignments included Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily, Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi, Naval Support Activity Manama, Surface Combat System Center Wallops Island, Virginia, and Navy Recruiting District Phoenix where he advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer, recognized as Medical Officer Recruiter of the Year, and selected into the Command Master Chief program.  

He assumed duties as Command Master Chief of Strategic Communications Wing ONE in February 2019.  

Master Chief Newsom is a graduate of Keystone (Class 19-2), Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 171) and the CMC/COB Course (Class 138).  He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Resource Management from Liberty University.

Master Chief served on teams that have been awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Navy Unit Commendations, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Navy “E” ribbon.​
