Commander Michael G. King

Executive Officer, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 49

27 October 2020 Commander King is a native of Chillicothe, Ohio, and received his commission from Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla. In August 2002 he reported to Corpus Christi, TX where he completed his primary flight training, after completion he reported to Pensacola, FL, for advanced flight training where he earned his wings in March 2004.

Commander King’s operational assignments include tours with Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR EIGHT (HSL-48), USS IWO JIMA, and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron THREE SEVEN (HSM-37). While at HSL-48 he deployed on USS LEYTE GULF in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He later deployed as Detachment Maintenance Officer with HARRY S. TRUMAN Carrier Strike Group on USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL again supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As a crewmember of the USS IWO JIMA, he deployed as Assistant Air Officer in support 24th MEU deployment to C5F/C6F AOR and earned his Officer of the Deck Underway qualification. With HSM-37 he deployed in USS CHAFEE in support of GEORGE WASHINGTON Carrier Strike Group to include Unitas Pacific/Atlantic. Upon returning from deployment, Commander King served as Squadron Maintenance Officer and was selected as the 2016 HSM-37 Officer of the Year.

Ashore, Commander King served at HSL-40 as a Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor Pilot in the SH-60B. In 2015 he reported to the Pentagon where he served on the Joint Staff, J-3 as a Strategic Surveillance Officer, Emergency Actions Officer, Assistant Deputy Director for Operations, and Presidential Strike Advisor in the National Military Command Center.
 
Commander King holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Masters of Military Art and Science in Military History from the Army Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth Kansas. He has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Three Awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (Three Awards), in addition to other unit and personal awards.
