Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Welcome

“When Sailors feel included, respected and empowered, they are mission ready, able to deter aggression and maintain freedom of the seas. Mission readiness is stronger when diverse strengths are used and differing perspectives are applied. By embracing Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) in our day-to-day work and decisions at a fundamental level, we harness the creative power of our differences, putting forward actions and strategies that accelerate and enable our Navy’s warfighting advantage.”
--Excerpt from Task Force 1N final report

Commander Naval Air Forces Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Policy

Creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace is our top priority.  As such, we have incorporated the CNO’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Goals of:
  • Institutionalizing Inclusion and Diversity across our Navy
  • Attracting and recruiting the best talent from our diverse nation to cultivate a high-performing and innovative workforce.
  • Developing and retaining Sailors and Navy civilians by ensuring an equitable and inclusive culture across our workforce into our strategic plan such that Naval Aviation will stay on the forefront of fostering a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion and will improve readiness across the force as we unleash the full potential, talents and skills of all our service members.
As a result, CNAF has established its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Priorities as:

Priority #1: Advance and sustain warfighting effectiveness through Accession, Development, and Retention of the most talented and diverse pools.
Priority #2: Cultural Progress of Inclusion and Diversity
Priority #3: Platform tangible benefits of Inclusion and Diversity in Warfighting

Commander Naval Air Forces believes that generating success as a team means going beyond merely understanding the unique perspectives of different people, cultures and skillsets.  Achieving top performance is enhanced when leaders tap into the energy and capability of an active and inclusive team and stands by the principles of investing in the development of our people so that each individual is empowered to reach his or her full potential.

To accomplish these goals, all of Naval Aviation leadership must be aligned to follow through with action, create and organizational culture that allows an environment that encourages free-flow of ideas, promotes trust in the organization, improves leadership cohesion, and advances organizational commitment. Leaders are charged with promoting a common understanding of this policy internally through career development, supporting retention initiatives, and by building long-standing relationships with affinity and community groups through outreach.

Our commitment to Navy Core Values and full utilization of our diverse talents enables us to create a more equitable and inclusive workforce, and effectively achieve our mission. Together, we leverage differences in the workforce to achieve better results, thereby, ensuring Naval Air Forces remains a top career choice for the citizens we protect and serve.

"In order to more effectively recruit, develop, manage, reward and retain the forces of tomorrow, aiming to simply avoid doing the wrong thing is too low a bar; we must actively pursue that which is right. When Sailors feel included, respected and empowered, they will more ready to win wars, deter aggression and maintain freedom of the seas."

- Adm. Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, Culture of Excellence NAVADMIN
