A native of Shepherd, Montana, Captain McCaffree graduated from the University of Idaho in 2000, earning a Bachelor of Science in History.  He was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in July 2000.  He earned his Naval Aviator Wings in January 2002.  In March 2002, CAPT McCaffree reported to the HS-10 “Warhawks” for initial fleet training as an SH-60F/HH-60H helicopter pilot. 

CAPT McCaffree began his operational flying in October 2002 with the “Dragonslayers” of HS-11.  While a “Dragonslayer”, he made one deployment aboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65), participating in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. 

CAPT McCaffree next reported to the HS-10 “Warhawks” as an instructor pilot and deployed aboard USNS GUNNERY SERGEANT FRED W. STOCKHAM (T AK 3017), USS PINCKNEY (DDG 91), and USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG 93) conducting Expanded Maritime Interdiction Operations (EMIO) in support of Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines (JSOTF-P).  Upon his return from deployment, CAPT McCaffree graduated from the Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor (SWTI) course.  CAPT McCaffree then attended and graduated from the Aviation Safety Officer (ASO) course and completed his tour as an instructor pilot in August 2008.
 
CAPT McCaffree returned to the fleet as a Helicopter Operations Officer and Flying Hour Program Manager for Carrier Air Wing 2 (CVW-2).  While assigned to CVW-2, he finished one deployment aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 75) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Following his tour with CVW-2, CAPT McCaffree reported to the HSC-12 “Golden Falcons” as a Department Head in 2010.  While with the “Golden Falcons,” he completed two deployments in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, serving as the Administrative Officer and Maintenance Officer.

In 2013, CAPT McCaffree attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI and graduated with distinction in 2014 with a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.

CAPT McCaffree next reported to United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), where he served as the branch chief for J-611, the National and Nuclear, Command, Control, Communications, and Computers (N2C4) Solutions branch.

During his tour at USSTRATCOM, CAPT McCaffree was selected for operational command, and reported to the HSC-23 “Wildcards” as Executive Officer in November 2016.  He then assumed command in March 2018.  During his time as a “Wildcard,” the squadron deployed detachments on USS AMERICA (LHA 6), USS CORONADO (LCS 4), and USNS MERCY (T AH 19), as well as supporting NASA in the final drop test of the Orion spacecraft.  Additionally, CAPT McCaffree led a detachment, which consisted of personnel from 5 different commands, to Texas to execute humanitarian operations in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

CAPT McCaffree’s subsequent orders were to the OPNAV staff as the MQ-8 Fire Scout Requirements Officer.  While assigned to OPNAV, he was selected for major command and a transition to the CMV-22B.

CAPT McCaffree has accumulated over 2,900 flight hours in various aircraft.  His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards) and various service awards and ribbons.
