A native of Burtonsville, Maryland, Commander Sheets graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2006, earning a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. CDR Sheets reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in January 2007 and earned his Naval Aviator Wings in July 2009 following the completion of advanced jet training at NAS Kingsville, TX. CDR Sheets then reported to NAS Oceana, VA for initial fleet training with the VFA-106 GLADIATORS in the FA-18E Super Hornet.

CDR Sheets joined the operational fleet in June 2010 with the KNIGHTHAWKS of VFA-136.  While at the KNIGHTHWAWKS, he made the final two deployments of USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65), flying combat missions in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.  At the conclusion of this tour CDR Sheets was selected to attend the Navy Fighter Weapons School TOPGUN.
Following the completion of TOPGUN, CDR Sheets reported to the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC) at NAS Fallon, NV as a member of the N5/STRIKE staff.  Serving as a Strike Fighter Instructor in support of Airwing Fallon, CDR Sheets flew the FA-18A-F as well as the F-16A Fighting Falcon.

CDR Sheets returned to the fleet in 2015, once again joining the KNIGHTHAWKS of VFA-136, this time as their Training Officer.  During that tour the KNIGHTHAWKS executed a permanent duty station move from NAS Oceana, VA to NAS Lemoore, CA.  At the completion of his Training Officer tour, CDR Sheets relocated back to NAS Oceana, VA as a department head with the VFA-105 GUNSLINGERS.  During a forty month department head tour, CDR Sheets deployed aboard USS DWIGHT D EISENHOWER (CVN 69), flying combat missions in support of Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.

Following his department head tour, CDR Sheets attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI, where he graduated with distinction, earning a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.  Upon completion of the Naval War College, CDR Sheets reported to NAS Lemoore, CA for refresher training in the FA-18E Super Hornet in preparation for joining the VFA-146 BLUE DIAMONDS.  CDR Sheets has accumulated over 2,000 flight hours and 500 carrier arrested landings.  He has been awarded the Strike/Flight Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and numerous service awards and ribbons.

Finally, CDR Sheets is married to the former Joy Hartley of La Plata, MD with whom he has two young daughters.  His career would not be possible without their sacrifices and unwavering love and support.
