24 October 2020 Master Chief Petty Officer Robert C. Laird Jr. is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1999 and attended basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois. Upon completion of basic training, he attended Operations Specialist "A" School in Dam Neck, Virginia.

His previous duty assignments include USS McFaul (DDG 74), homeported in Norfolk, VA; Navy Operational Support Center Wilmington, Delaware, USS Vicksburg (CG 69), homeported in Mayport, Florida, where he was selected to the rank of Chief and Senior Chief Petty Officer and attained both Force and Tactical Action Officer qualifications, Afloat Training Group Mayport, Florida, during this tour, he attained Afloat and Master Training Specialist qualifications, the first operational United States Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System, as Command Senior Enlisted Leader, forward deployed in Deveselu, Romania where he was humbly selected to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.

His most recent assignment was onboard USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) as Operations Department Leading Chief Petty Officer, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, while onboard he was selected for the Command Senior Enlisted Leader program. He is a proud graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 179, Khaki) and CMC/COB Course Class 20070.

He reported in May 2020 as Command Master Chief of VAQ-138 "YellowJackets", homeported in Whidbey Island, Washington.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (seven awards) and numerous unit and campaign awards. He attributes all his personal awards and success to his family, mentors, and the Sailors with whom he has proudly served with exemplifying the Navy's Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
