Captain William Frank

A native of Decatur, IL, Commander Frank graduated from Purdue University in 2001, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication. CDR Frank was commissioned through Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps in December of 2001 and immediately began flight training at NAS Pensacola, FL. Earning his Naval Aviator Wings of Gold in September of 2003, he reported to NAS Oceana,  VA, and the “Grim Reapers” of VF-101 for initial flight training in the F-14D Tomcat.  Upon successful completion of the FRS, he received orders to the “Tomcatters” of VF-31 deploying to the Western Pacific aboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) and to the Arabian Gulf aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

CDR Frank reported to the “Gladiators” of VFA-106 at NAS Oceana, VA, in October of 2006 for his transition to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. After transitioning to the Super Hornet, he remained at VFA-106, where he served as an instructor Weapons System Officer (WSO), coffee mess officer, assistant Fighter Weapons Phase Head and Fighter Weapons Phase Head flying the F/A-18 B/D/F. In January of 2009, he was assigned to CVW-1 staff in Oceana as Strike Operations Officer, deploying in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM aboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65).

CDR Frank reported to the “Black Knights” of VFA-154 in February 2012, serving as a department head in the safety, administrative, and maintenance departments. During this tour, he deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM aboard the USS NIMITZ (CVN 68).
Following a successful tour with the “Black Knights,” CDR Frank was selected to report to the “Flying Eagles” of VFA-122, where he served as the Operations Officer for the west coast F/A-18 E/F Fleet Replacement Squadron. 
In 2017, CDR Frank reported as the Executive Officer of VFA-22 and assumed Command in November 2018.  While in command, the Fighting Redcocks deployed with the THEODORE ROOSEVELT Strike Group in support of Operations INHERENT RESOLVE and FREEDOM’S SENTINEL. The squadron received the 2018 CNAP Battle “E” Efficiency, the RDML Wade C. McClusky Award, LTJG Bruce Carrier Award for Maintenance Excellence, the BOOLA-BOOLA Award for Air Warfare Excellence, the Retention Excellence Award, and the 2019 Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Pacific Scott F. Kirby Ordnance Proficiency Award.
CDR Frank is a 2021 graduate of the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy where he earned a Master of Science Degree in National Resource Strategy. He has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours and 700 carrier arrested landings. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), and various other campaign and service ribbons.
