Commander Jacob Vrbas

Commanding Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 139

25 October 2020 A native of Atwood, Kansas, CDR Vrbas was commissioned through the NROTC Program at the University of Kansas in 2003. He earned his Naval Flight Officer “Wings of Gold” in June 2005 at NAS Pensacola, FL.  He reported to the “Vikings” of VAQ-129 in August of 2005 for training in the EA-6B Prowler.

CDR Vrbas began his first operational flying tour in October 2006 with the “Black Ravens” of VAQ-135.  While a Black Raven, he completed three deployments aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN-68), participating in Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. 

CDR Vrbas reported to NAS Lemoore, CA in November of 2009, where he transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet with the VFA-122 “Flying Eagles.”  In May 2011 he reported to VAQ-129 as an EA-18G Growler instructor. In August 2013, CDR Vrbas joined the staff of Commander, Carrier Air Wing NINE (CVW-9). 

In July 2015, CDR Vrbas reported once again to the “Black Ravens” of VAQ-135 as a Department Head and served as the Administrative Officer, Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer while completing an expeditionary deployment to the Western Pacific. CDR Vrbas reported to the Missile Defense Agency in Colorado Springs in April of 2017 and served as the USCENTCOM Branch Chief for Exercises and Wargames.  Following refresher training, he reported to VAQ-139 as the Executive Officer in April 2020. Commander Vrbas assumed command of the VAQ-139 Cougars in July 2021.

CDR Vrbas has accumulated over 2,200 flight hours and 480 carrier arrested landings. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 Awards), Air Medal and various service awards and ribbons.  He and his wife of 9 years have two children.
