Commander Tommy Kolwicz

26 October 2020 Commander CDR Tommy Kolwicz, a native of Danbury, Connecticut, graduated the United States Naval Academy in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering.  After primary flight training at NAS Whiting Field, Florida, he completed advanced jet training at NAS Meridian, Mississippi, and was “winged” as a Naval Aviator in December 2005. 

CDR Kolwicz, then reported to the “Gladiators” of VFA-106 for initial fleet training in the F/A-18C Hornet.  CDR Kolwicz reported to the “Warhawks” of VFA-97 for his first operational fleet assignment in 2006.  While aboard, he completed a deployment to Iwakuni, Japan attached to MAG-12 as part of the USN/USMC Tactical Air Integration Program and deployed to the Western Pacific aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. 

In July 2010, CDR Kolwicz was selected to attend the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), after which he transitioned to the F/A-18E Super Hornet and reported to STRIKE FIGHTER WEAPONS SCHOOL PACIFIC as a Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor.  Upon completion of his Weapons School tour, CDR Kolwicz reported to the “Fists of the Fleet” of VFA-25 where he served as Training Officer.  In 2014, he reported to the “Sidewinders” of VFA-86 for his Department Head tour.  CDR Kolwicz deployed aboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) to the Mediterranean and the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.  During this tour CDR Kolwicz was selected as the 2016 LCDR Michael Hoff Attack Aviator of the Year. 

Following his Department Head tour, CDR Kolwicz received orders to Navy Personnel Command (NPC), NSA Mid-South, Millington, Tennessee, to serve as F/A-18 and F-35 Placement Officer.  While stationed at NPC he completed an Executive Masters of Public Administration degree from Arizona State University.  In December 2019, CDR Kolwicz reported to the “Tophatters” of VFA-14 as Executive Officer. 

CDR Kolwicz has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours and over 400 carrier arrested landings.  His personal awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (four awards), and various campaign and unit awards.
