Commander Stephen Augustyn

26 October 2020 A native of Chicago, Illinois, Commander Augustyn graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2003, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of California Los Angeles. CDR Augustyn was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in December 2003. Upon completion of flight training in Pensacola, CDR Augustyn reported to the VAW 120 “Greyhawks” for initial fleet training as an E-2C Air Battle Manager.  CDR Augustyn earned his Naval Flight Officer Wings in November 2005.

CDR Augustyn began his operational flying in August 2006 with the “Sun Kings” of VAW-116.  While a “Sun King”, he deployed aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), participating in Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM.  During this tour, CDR Augustyn graduated from the Air Intercept Control Course at the Navy Strike Fighter Weapons School and selected for the Hawkeye Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course at the Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School.

CDR Augustyn reported to the Unites States Air Force Weapons School at Nellis AFB in December 2009 and became the third E-2 aviator to qualify as a United States Air Force Weapons Officer as a part of USAFWS class 10A. CDR Augustyn remained on staff with the 8th Weapons Squadron and was recognized as the top command and control instructor in class 11B.

CDR Augustyn returned to the fleet as a Training Officer with VAW-116.  While with the “Sun Kings”, he completed a deployment aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Following his Training Officer tour, CDR Augustyn reported to the “Golden Hawks” of VAW-112 as a Department Head serving as both Safety Officer and Operations Officer. CDR Augustyn completed a WESTPAC deployment aboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) and was recognized as the CVW-9 NFO of the year in 2016. 

Following his department head tour, CDR Augustyn served as Officer in Charge of Airborne Command & Control and Logistics Weapons School. After selecting for command, he returned to ACCLWS as XO in 2020 and assumed command in 2021.

CDR Augustyn has accumulated over 1,800 flight hours in and 357 carrier arrested landings in the E-2C, including 46 combat missions. His awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal (2 awards), Air Force Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various service awards and ribbons.
