Commanding Officer, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 75

28 October 2020 Commander Tom Mashuda is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was commissioned in 2003 through the NROTC program at Virginia Tech where he earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Political Science. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Naval Post Graduate School and graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval War College with a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies. 
Commander Mashuda was designated a Naval Aviator in June 2005. During his career he has qualified in the SH-60B and MH-60R Seahawk. He has accumulated over 2,900 flight hours in military aircraft and is a graduate of the Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor course.
At sea, Commander Mashuda served at Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR FOUR (HSL 44) where he completed Carrier Strike Group deployments aboard USS JAMES E. WILLIAMS (DDG 95) and USS MASON (DDG 87) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and counter-piracy operations in the U.S. Fifth Fleet Area of Responsibility. Additionally, he served at Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVEN EIGHT (HSM 78) as Training Officer and Weapons and Tactics Instructor, earning distinction as the squadron’s first Pilot of the Year in 2012. He completed his Department Head tour with HSM 74 where he served as the Combat Element THREE Officer-in-Charge (OIC) while deployed aboard USS MASON (DDG 87) during the squadron’s inaugural Carrier Air Wing deployment. Additionally, he served as the squadron’s Operations Officer, and was selected as the Commander Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing, Atlantic Officer of the Year for 2015.
Commander Mashuda’s shore assignments include Instructor Pilot and Quality Assurance Officer at HSM 41, and military analyst and action officer in various divisions of the Joint Staff J7, Joint Force Development Directorate in Suffolk, VA.
His military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
 Commander Mashuda assumed command of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVEN FIVE (HSM-75) in August 2021.
