03 November 2020 CMDCM Grey, a native of Portland, Oregon, began his Navy career in 1998 by completing Recruit Training, Basic Engineering, Electrical, and IC “A” School in Great Lakes, IL.   

He reported to his first sea assignment aboard USS COWPENS (CG-63) in San Diego, CA in 1999.  During his tour, he completed a deployment/crew-swap with USS MOBILE BAY (CG-53) in Yokosuka Japan in 2000, advanced to Petty Officer Second Class, and qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist.  He transferred to his next assignment with the Armed Forces Network Sigonella, Italy in 2002 followed by his return stateside in 2003 onboard Naval Hospital, San Diego where he was recognized as the Navy Medicine Enlisted Information Professional of the Year.

In 2006, he transferred to Mobile Security Detachment 32 and deployed to Bahrain.  He earned his Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist designation and was selected to stand up the Navy’s first dedicated Helicopter Visit Boarding Search and Seizure Team (HVBSS Team 1).  As Team Leader, he led the training pipeline development, outfitting of the new program, and led the team on their maiden deployment embarked on USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) in 2008, where he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer.  After the HVBSS Teams were disestablished in 2009, he transitioned to the Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 3 staff, as the Weapons/Special Missions LCPO.  In addition to teaching firearms and combatives to the Squadron’s Active and Reserve Sailors, he deployed with Maritime Civil Affairs in support of the African Partnership Mission in 2009, and once again in 2011 with the Squadron.     

In 2012, he qualified as a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) Craftmaster at Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Pacific prior to reporting to Assault Craft Unit FIVE (ACU-5).  During this tour, he was selected for Senior Chief in 2013 prior to serving aboard USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD-8) on their 2014/2015 deployment where he also earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist designation.  He then served as Senior Enlisted Leader for Detachment Bravo until his reassignment as the Senior Enlisted Leader for all ACU-5 sea detachments where he was selected for Master Chief in 2018 and then the Command Master Chief program in 2020.  He currently serves as the Command Master Chief for HSC-23.

CMDCM Grey is a Dean’s List Graduate of the Naval War College Senior Enlisted Academy (193-Khaki), and he earned his BA in General Education and Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University.  His awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (two awards),and various campaign, service, and unit awards.
