05 November 2020 Captain Covarrubias, a native of Buena Park, Calif., graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in History and received his Naval Aviator Wings of Gold in December, 2000.

Covarrubias’ first Fleet tour was flying the F/A-18C Hornet with Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113 at Naval Air Station Lemoore (NASL), Calif., from 2002 to 2005. During this tour, he completed a 10-month combat deployment onboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) with Carrier Air Wing FOURTEEN (CVW-14) and flew combat missions during Operations SOUTHERN WATCH and ENDURING FREEDOM as well as opening night strikes during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. In 2004 he completed his second deployment onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74).

In February 2005, Covarrubias reported to VFA-125 at NASL, where he served as an F/A-18 flight instructor. Covarrubias then reported to CVW-9 in 2007 as CAG landing signals officer (LSO) and Assistant Operations Officer. During this tour he was designated an air wing strike lead and completed two deployments in the 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility (AOR) onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74), flying both F/A-18C and E models.

In 2009, Covarrubias was assigned to VFA-146 and deployed to the 5th and 7rd Fleet AORs as part of CVW-14 onboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76). From 2011 to 2013, he was assigned to the Joint Staff, J3 at the Pentagon and served in the National Military Command Center (NMCC) as the Assistant Deputy Director and Nuclear Strike Advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

From 2014 to 2016, he served as the executive officer and commanding officer of VFA-146. During this tour he led the Diamonds to a successful transition from legacy LOT X Hornets to Super Hornets, earning the coveted CVW-11 Golden Wrench award, a top honor on the flight line.

In 2016, Covarrubias was selected to the 0-5 TACAIR Detailer position at the Bureau in Millington, Tenn. where he managed a cadre of 800 plus commanders across the VFA/VAW/VAQ/VRC and JSF communities. In December of 2017 he fleeted up to the head detailer position where he managed all aviation community manpower resourcing for commanders and below within the naval aviation enterprise (NAE).

Covarrubias departed Millington for Eglin Air Force Base (AFB) as the commanding officer for the Grim Reapers at VFA-101. While there, Covarrubias led the deactivation efforts of the Navy’s first F-35C Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) before taking over as the commanding officer of the Rough Raiders of VFA-125, the Navy’s F-35C JSF training command. He is currently serving as the Commodore for Commander, Joint Strike Fighter Wing (CJSFW).

Covarrubias’ personal awards include a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four Meritorious Service Medals, three Air Medals, one with a combat “V,” four Navy Commendation Medals, one with a combat “V,” a Navy Achievement Medal and various other campaign, service and unit awards. He has logged more than 2000 hours in the F-18 Legacy and Super Hornet as well as the F-35C.
