Commanding Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 141

20 December 2020 A native of Englewood, Colorado Commander Coates graduated from LeTourneau University in 2003, earning a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science. CDR Coates was commissioned through Officer Candidate School and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in August 2004.  He earned his Naval Flight Officer Wings in May 2006.  In November 2006, CDR Coates reported to the VAQ 129 “Vikings” for initial fleet training as an EA-6B Electronic Countermeasures Officer.
CDR Coates began his operational flying in August 2007 with the “Rooks” of VAQ 137.  While a “Rook”, he made one deployment aboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) and later deployed with the VAQ 140 “Patriots” aboard USS EISENHOWER (CVN 69), participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  At the end of this tour CDR Coates graduated from the Electronic Attack Weapons School.
CDR Coates completed transition training as an EA-18G Electronic Warfare Officer at VAQ 129, and then reported to the Airborne Electronic Attack Weapons School at Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center in June 2011, serving as the first HAVOC Antiradiation Missile Subject Matter Expert.
CDR Coates returned to the fleet with the VAQ 137 “Rooks” as their Training Officer.  While with the Rooks, he completed one deployment aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.  Then, as a Department Head in VAQ 136, the “Gauntlets,” he completed two deployments aboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in support of THIRD and SEVENTH FLEET operations, serving as the Safety Officer, Operations Officer, and Maintenance Officer.
Following his department head tour, CDR Coates served as the Airborne Electronic Attack Weapons School Assistant Department Head at Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center.  He selected for squadron command in March 2019 and reported to VAQ-141 as Executive Officer in January 2021.
CDR Coates has accumulated over 2,500 flight hours in 6 aircraft and 505 carrier arrested landings, including 66 combat missions.  His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards) and various service awards and ribbons.
