29 December 2020 Captain Sweeney attended James Madison University and entered commissioned service through Officer Candidate School in 1999.  He received his wings of gold following advanced flight training in Meridian, MS.
After initial training in the F/A-18C, Captain Sweeney reported to his first operational assignment with VFA-195 where he served as squadron division officer.  Following an instruction tour ashore, he served as Air Wing Landing Signal Officer with CVW-3 prior to his department head tour with VFA-37.  In 2014, Captain Sweeney reported to the VFA-81 Sunliners where he served as the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer.  He has completed 7 deployments aboard USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75), and USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) supporting operations and exercises within USCENTCOM, USEUCOM, AND USINDOPACOM theaters.  Captain Sweeney has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours and 700 arrested landings.
Ashore, Captain Sweeney’s assignments include serving as Instructor Pilot at VFMAT-101; attending the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island; and serving as Homeland Defense Future Operations Division Chief and Executive Assistant to the Director of Operations at USNORTHCOM.
Captain Sweeney reported to Carrier Air Wing FIVE in November of 2020.
His personal decorations and unit citations are attributed to the outstanding men and women he has served with during his various tours.
