Commander Van Allen

Commanding Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129

19 October 2021 Commander Van Allen is a native of Barkhamsted, Connecticut.  He graduated from Marist College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and earned his commission through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL.  He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in September of 2001.
After completing fleet replacement training in December of 2002, Commander Van Allen was assigned to the Shadowhawks of VAQ-141.  He deployed onboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM; and after attending the Prowler Tactics instructor (PTI) course, he served as the Shadowhawk’s Training Officer while deploying again onboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
In March of 2006, Commander Van Allen reported to the Vikings of VAQ-129 as a Fleet Replacement Squadron instructor.  He attended Aviation Safety Officer (ASO) School and served as a squadron ASO, NATOPS Officer, and Student Control Officer.
Following instructor duty, in February of 2009, CDR Van Allen reported to Commander, Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW-5) in Atsugi, Japan, where he served as the Assistant Operations Officer.  During his tenure CVW-5 participated in multiple Joint and Multi-Lateral Exercises throughout the Seventh Fleet AOR onboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73).
In 2011, Commander Van Allen reported as a Department Head in the Garudas of VAQ-134.  He twice deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, once onboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) and again onboard USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN-77) on the Navy’s final EA-6B deployment.
After his department head tour, Commander Van Allen attended the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI where, in addition to the core curriculum, he was a member of the Advanced Strategist Program.  He earned a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies, graduating with Highest Distinction and earning the Drs. Daniel and Susan Thys Award for Academic Excellence.
In September of 2016, CDR Van Allen completed EA-18G transition training and reported to the Patriots of VAQ-140 as the Executive Officer.  He assumed command in December of 2017 and deployed onboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) in support of Operation RESOLUTE SUPPORT.
Following command, CDR Van Allen was assigned to Naval Striking and Support Forces, NATO (STRIKFORNATO) in Lisbon, Portugal.  He served as Maritime Strike Planner in the J5 Plans Division, supporting updates to NATO’s Graduated Response Plans and the NATO Standing Defense Plan.
Commander Van Allen has accumulated over 3,200 flight hours and 600 carrier arrested landings.  He is a recipient of the CDR Robert “Detox” Eastman III Inspirational Leadership Award.  Other personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal Strike/Flight (6), Navy Commendation (4) with Combat V, Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.
