Commander Mike Campbell

28 December 2021 Commander Mike Campbell is a native of Georgetown, Delaware and a 2001 graduate of Elon College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.  He attended Officer Candidate School in February of 2003 and upon commissioning, reported for primary, intermediate and advanced flight training in Pensacola, FL.  He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 2005 and reported to the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) at VFA-122 in Lemoore, California for training in the F/A-18F Super Hornet.
 
Upon completing the FRS, Commander Campbell served his first fleet tour with the DIAMONDBACKS of VFA-102 in Atsugi, Japan where he embarked six times onboard USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) and USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) and participated in multiple exercises including TALISMAN SABER, VALIANT SHIELD and KEEN SWORD. While assigned to VFA-102 he served as Schedules Officer, Ground Safety Officer, and Air-to-Air Weapons Training Officer and earned qualifications as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller and Forward Air Controller (Airborne).
 
Following his tour with VFA-102, Commander Campbell graduated from the Naval Strike Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and subsequently reported to Strike Fighter Weapons School Atlantic in Virginia Beach, VA where he became the General Purpose Weapons and Air-to-Surface Mission Planning subject matter expert. In 2012, he joined the CHECKMATES of VFA-211 where he served as the training officer. He deployed with VFA-211 onboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) flying combat sorties in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM.      
 
After his Training Officer tour, Commander Campbell attended Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA and earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies. In 2015, he returned to VFA-102 as a Department Head (DH) where he served as the Safety, Administrative and Maintenance Officer while completing four deployments onboard USS RONALD REGAN (CVN 76). During his DH tour, Commander Campbell completed the Air Interdiction Mission Commander course and was designated an Air Wing Strike Lead.
 
Following his DH tour, Commander Campbell reported to United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) located on MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL for joint staff duty in the J5 directorate. While assigned to USSOCOM, he served as the Future Concepts Branch Chief and lead action officer for multiple Functional Combatant Command engagements. In 2018, he was selected for Operational Command and subsequently completed a re-qualification syllabus at VFA-122 prior to joining the MIGHTY SHRIKES of VFA-94 as the Executive Officer in September of 2020.      
 
Commander Campbell has accumulated over 2500 flight hours and 450 carrier arrested landings. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.
