Commander Joseph E. Stierwalt

CDR Stierwalt is a native of Unicoi, Tennessee, who enlisted in the Navy in February of 1993. After 11 years of enlisted service and multiple Deployments, he graduated from Limestone University (Gaffney, SC) with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a minor in Computer Science. CDR Stierwalt attended Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL and was commissioned in February of 2004.

After being designated as an Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer and completing Aviation Maintenance Officer School in Pensacola, FL, CDR Stierwalt reported to the combat proven Lancers of Electronic Attack Squadron ONE THREE ONE in 2004, completing two combat Deployments with CVW2 aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN72), winning the Admiral Arthur W. Radford Excellence Award (2006), the Battle ‘E’ (2006), and the COMVAQWINGPAC 2007 Maintenance Squadron of the Year. CDR Stierwalt served as Material Control Officer, Aircraft Division Officer, and Maintenance Material Control Officer. The Lancers Deployed in support of Operations UNIFIED ASSISTANCE, IRAQI FREEDOM, and ENDURING FREEDOM as well as Exercises FOAL EAGLE, VALIANT SHIELD, and RIMPAC.

In 2007 CDR Stierwalt reported to the USS DWIGHT D EISENHOWER (CVN69) as the IM-4 Division Officer, IM-2 Division Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, and as an Officer of the Deck Underway (OOD/U) through two combat Deployments. IKE deployed in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM, during which CDR Stierwalt had the honor of being the OOD/U for the first pier side docking of a Nimitz Class Carrier, and the first Carrier since 1948 to dock pier side in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.

CDR Stierwalt reported to Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic in 2010 as the Assistant Shore Readiness Officer, working shore based squadron readiness, training, and manpower issues as well as facilities, SE, and IMRL maintenance and acquisition issues.

In 2012, CDR Stierwalt was assigned as the Aircraft/Ship Integration Officer for Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command at the Washington Navy Yard, DC. In addition to leading multiple IPTs in the integration of the F-35B Lightning II onto L-Class ships and the integration of MV-22 Osprey aircraft onto NATO allied vessels, CDR Stierwalt was the Program Manager for two surface ship support equipment systems in support of both airframes. It was during this tour that CDR Stierwalt graduated with honors from American Military University with a Master of Arts in Political Science with a minor in National Security Strategy.

CDR Stierwalt reported to the Tridents of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron NINE in 2015 where he served as Assistant Maintenance Officer and Maintenance Officer through one combat Deployment with CVW8 aboard USS GEORGE H W BUSH (CVN77). The Tridents Deployed in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE and Exercise SAXON WARRIOR.

In 2018, CDR Stierwalt reported to Commander, Naval Air Forces Atlantic as the Aviation Readiness Analysis Officer and the Program Manager of the Aviation Maintenance Supply Readiness Reporting (AMSRR) system program, guiding Naval Aviation’s premier unit readiness reporting IT system through a comprehensive and complex Technical Refresh and fielding.

CDR Stierwalt reported to Naval Aviation Maintenance Center for Excellence Lemoore in November 2020, where he currently serves as the Officer in Charge.

CDR Stierwalt’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), as well as various service and unit awards and campaign medals. Additionally, he is a fully qualified Acquisition Corps Professional and has earned DAWIA certification in Production Quality Manufacturing (Level III), Life Cycle Logistics (Level II), and Program Management (Level II). CDR Stierwalt is qualified and proud to wear the Professional Aviation Maintenance Officer (PAMO) Warfare Qualification device, is a Master Training Specialist, and is qualified to wear the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist device.

CDR Stierwalt is married to the Rev. Suzanne M. (Czernik) Stierwalt of Havelock, NC. They have two beautiful daughters, Elaina and Jillian, and a spunky and delightful granddaughter, Zara Belle and reside in Suffolk, VA.
