Commander Alan "Carl" Carlson

Executive Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 140

25 October 2020 A native of Westminster, Colorado, Commander Carlson graduated from Colorado State University in 2002, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. CDR Carlson was commissioned through Officer Candidate School and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in May of 2003. He earned his Naval Flight Officer Wings in October of 2004. In November of 2004, CDR Carlson reported to the VAQ 129 “Vikings” for initial fleet training as an EA-6B Electronic Countermeasures Officer. 

CDR Carlson began his operational flying in January 2006 with the “Patriots” of VAQ 140.  While a “Patriot”, he made two deployments aboard USS DWIGHT D EISENHOWER (CVN 69), participating in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.  During this tour CDR Carlson graduated from the Electronic Attack Weapons School.

CDR Carlson reported to the Strike Fighter Weapon School in Virginia Beach, VA in December 2009. He was an instructor for the Strike Fighter Advanced Readiness Program (SFARP) phase of the fleet response training plan (FRTP) cycle.  He served as the Assistant Operations Officer.

CDR Carlson reported to the staff of Carrier Air Wing Eight (CVW8).  He deployed aboard the USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH (CVN 77) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.

CDR Carlson returned to the fleet as a Department Head in June of 2015 with VAQ-134, the “Garudas”.  While with the “Garudas”, he transitioned the squadron from the EA-6B to the EA-18G, serving as both Operations and Maintenance Officer.

Following his department head tour, CDR Carlson served as the VAQ Placement Officer at PERS-43 in Millington, TN.  While at PERS-43, he organized personnel for the VAQ community, Naval Aviation Schools Command, Training Airwing Six and the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center.  He was selected for squadron command in April of 2018 and is currently serving as Executive Officer of VAQ-140.

CDR Carlson has accumulated over 2,300 flight hours in 11 aircraft and has 381 carrier arrested landings.  He has flown 105 combat missions. His awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal (five awards), Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards) and various service awards and ribbons.
