Commanding Officer, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 35

27 October 2020 CDR Daniel J. Schlesinger, a native of Bonita, California graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering.

CDR Schlesinger completed primary flight training in Corpus Christi, TX.  Advanced flight training was conducted in Pensacola, FL, where he earned his wings in May 2004.  Following completion of SH-60B training, he reported to the BattleCats of HSL-43 in San Diego, CA.  There he completed deployments onboard USS REUBEN JAMES (FFG 57) and USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61) supporting 5th FLEET counter-piracy and Operation Iraqi Freedom objectives.  In addition to flight duties, he served as an embarked Maintenance Officer as well as the squadron Quality Assurance Officer.
Upon leaving HSL-43, CDR Schlesinger reported for SH-60B flight instructor duty at HSL-40 in Mayport, FL in October 2008.  There he trained Fleet Replacement Pilots and Aircrewmen and flew over 700 instructional flight hours which led to his designation as the 2010 Naval Helicopter Association Fleet Instructor Pilot of the Year.

CDR Schlesinger then reported to HSM-41 to transition from the SH-60B to the MH-60R aircraft.  Upon syllabus completion, he liaised as instructional flight pilot at HSM-41 while attached as a Super Junior Officer to HSM-73.  While at HSM-73, he conducted developmental testing onboard USS FREEDOM (LCS 1), the first LCS class ship to successfully embark an MH-60R aircraft.  In 2013, he was named the HSM-73 Pilot of the Year.
CDR Schlesinger then reported to HSM-37 in October 2013 as the Officer in Charge (OIC) of HSM-37 Detachment FOUR.  As OIC, he led HSM-37’s first MH-60R embarked detachment onboard USS MICHAEL MURPHY (DDG 112) completing 944 mishap-free flight hours in support of 7th FLEET

Pacific Presence Operations.  After departing HSM-37, he earned a Masters of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies at the United States Naval War College in November 2016. 

CDR Schlesinger entered his joint tour in the J5 Directorate at United States Northern Command in November of 2016.  He initially was the Military Deputy in the Counter Narcotics Division.  He then served as the Executive Assistant for the J5, J5 Deputy (United States), and the J5 Deputy (Canadian Forces).  In August 2019, he reported to HSM-35 as the Executive Officer.

CDR Schlesinger has flown over 2700 flight hours in the H-60.  His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various service and unit awards.
