Commander Robert E. Woodards

Commanding Officer, Patrol Squadron (VP) 1

03 November 2020 Commander Robert E. Woodards was born in Tague, Korea. He grew up in a military family, spending over 13 years in Mannheim, Germany. He graduated in 1996 from James Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Navy in June of 1996, after being selected for the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program. Upon his completion of the BOOST program he attended Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and in May 2002, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology and was commissioned as a Naval Officer. In April 2004, he was designated as a Naval Aviator and following his training at VP-30 he reported to VP-5 "Mad Foxes" in 2005.

While assigned to VP-5, he deployed to the FOURTH, FIFTH, SIXTH and SEVENTH FLEET Areas of Operation where he flew combat missions over Iraq, Kosovo, Somalia and the Philippines in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Commander Woodards finished his tour as the VP-5 Pilot Training Officer and was selected to become a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) Instructor Pilot (IP) at VP-30 "Pro's Nest".

He reported as a member of the "Pro's Nest" in March 2008. During his time there, he was selected to become a Weapons Tactics Instructor and assisted in the establishment of the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Weapons School (MPRWS) where he served as Weapons Pilot. While at VP-30 he also worked as a Fleet Instructor Under Training (FIUT) IP, Fleet NATOPS Evaluator and concluded his time there as the Pilot Training Officer.

In 2011, CDR Woodards reported to the USS George Washington (CVN 73) home-ported in Yokosuka Japan. While onboard the "Spirit of Freedom", his primary duty was Aircraft Launch and Recovery Officer or "Shooter". During his tenure he served as the V-2 Division Officer as CVN 73 was deployed four times in the SEVENTH FLEET Area of Operation. Following his time onboard CVN 73 he was selected to attend the Canadian Forces College (CFC) located in Toronto Canada in July of 2013 where he earned his Masters of Defense Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada. He then reported to the "Fighting Marlins" of VP-40 in October of 2014.

While at VP-40 as a Department Head, CDR Woodards served as Assistant Training Officer, Training Officer and Operations Officer. As part of the "Fighting Marlins" he deployed to the FIFTH, SIXTH and SEVENTH FLEET Areas of Operation and flew combat missions in support of OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE. After VP-40, CDR Woodards reported to Naval Personnel Command to serve as the Aircraft Carrier (CVN) and Carrier Strike Group (CSG) Placement Officer for PERS-43.

CDR Woodards personal awards include five Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and several unit and campaign awards.
