Commander Nathaniel “Stray” Michael

A native of Coppell, Texas, CDR Michael graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2004 with a degree in Economics. He completed pilot training and earned his Naval Aviator Wings at Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi in 2007.
Upon completion of training in the F/A-18C Hornet at Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106, CDR Michael began his operational flying with the “Valions” of VFA-15 at NAS Oceana, Virginia. In 2008, he deployed aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
CDR Michael then returned to the Fleet Replacement Squadron at VFA-106 to serve as an Instructor Pilot from 2011-2013. While with the “Gladiators” he flew all variants of the Hornet and Super Hornet and served as Strike Phase Head.
After completing Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) Planner certification, he transferred to Yokosuka, Japan in 2014. There he worked in the TLAM Mission Planning Cell for Commander, U.S. SEVENTH Fleet aboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) and conducted multiple deployments throughout the SEVENTH Fleet area of responsibility.
In 2015, CDR Michael transitioned to the Electronic Attack community and completed training in the EA-18G Growler at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. He served as Department Head with the “Gray Wolves'' of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 142 where he deployed aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) in 2017 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
Subsequently, CDR Michael was assigned to joint duty at U.S. European Command staff in Stuttgart, Germany where he served as Future Operations Logistics Planner from 2019-2021.
Returning to NAS Whidbey Island, he has proudly served with the “Scorpions” of VAQ-132 since June 2022
CDR Nate “Stray” Michael has amassed over 2,860 flight hours and 375 carrier arrested landings. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike Flight Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and various other personal, unit, service and campaign awards.
