Commander Omar “Odd Job” Sanusi

A native of Canton, Massachusetts, Commander Sanusi was commissioned in 2008 through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program at Villanova University. He was selected for the Immediate Graduate Education Program, earning a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. CDR Sanusi earned his “Wings of Gold” in May 2011. CDR Sanusi reported to the VAQ-129 “Vikings” for initial fleet training as an EA-18G pilot. 

CDR Sanusi began his operational flying with the “Rooks” of VAQ-137.  While a “Rook”, he deployed aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71), participating in Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. In March 2016, CDR Sanusi reported back to VAQ-129 as an Instructor Pilot where he served as the Carrier Qualification Phase Head and EA-18G CRM Program Manager. During this tour, CDR Sanusi was selected as FRS Instructor Pilot of the Year for 2017. 

In November 2017 CDR Sanusi returned early to the fleet as CAG Paddles for CVW-3 in Oceana, Virginia. For his Department Head tour, he was assigned to the “Shadowhawks” of VAQ-141 in Iwakuni, Japan.  While with the Shadowhawks, he completed three deployments aboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), supporting various operations and exercises in INDOPACOM and Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL in CENTCOM.

Following his department head tour, CDR Sanusi reported to Navy Personnel Command to serve as the VAQ, NAWDC, and VT NFO Placement Officer. He was selected for command in March 2022 and reported to VAQ-140 as Executive Officer in May 2024.

CDR Sanusi has accumulated over 2,500 flight hours, 33 combat missions, and over 375 carrier-arrested landings. His awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards),        Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards) and various service awards and ribbons. CDR Sanusi is supported by his magnificent wife Danielle, and their two children Olivia and Lucas.
