Commander James Miller was raised in Upper Arlington, Ohio and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. CDR Miller earned his Naval Flight Officer wings in 2008. After initial training in the P-3C “Orion”, his first fleet assignment was with the “Mad Foxes” of Patrol Squadron FIVE, where he completed two overseas deployments operating in the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility. On his second deployment, while supporting Operation ODYSSEY DAWN, his crew made history by becoming the only P-3C aircrew to fire an AGM-65 “Maverick” missile against a hostile target. During this tour, CDR Miller completed the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Weapons School’s Weapons and Tactics Instructor course. Upon completion of his first operational tour, CDR Miller transitioned to the P-8A “Poseidon” aircraft and stood up the P-8A Weapons and Tactics Unit at Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing ELEVEN where he helped the first three P-8A squadrons prepare for their initial deployments. Returning to sea, CDR Miller served as an Aircraft Launch and Recovery Officer and Officer of the Deck aboard the USS RONALD REGAN (CVN-76). There he served as the V-1, V-2, and V-5 Division Officer, conducted four patrols in the Western Pacific, and shifted the ship’s homeport from San Diego, California to Yokosuka, Japan. While onboard, CDR Miller was selected as a 2016 Fleet Scholar and graduated with a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and Asset Management from the University of Texas at Austin in 2019. Upon graduation, CDR Miller returned to the “Mad Foxes” of Patrol Squadron FIVE as a Department Head. There he served as Administrative and Maintenance Officer and deployed twice to the Seventh Fleet area of operations. Following his department head tour, CDR Miller served as the Deputy Executive Assistant to the Director, Air Warfare (OPNAV N98) where he screened for Operational Command. He joined the “Fighting Marlins” of Patrol Squadron FOUR ZERO in 2024 as the Executive Officer. CDR Miller has over 2,000 flight hours and has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3), and various unit and campaign awards.
