Commander Brett Jakovich
Executive Officer, Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 14

A native of Cambridge, Minnesota, Commander Jakovich graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2007, earning a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science. CDR Jakovich was commissioned through Officer Candidate School and reported to NAS Pensacola, Florida, for flight training in September 2007. He earned his Naval Aviator Wings with the VT-21 “Redhawks” in Kingsville, Texas, in May 2010. In June 2010, CDR Jakovich reported to the VFA-122 “Flying Eagles” in Lemoore, California, for initial fleet training as a F/A-18 Super Hornet Pilot.
CDR Jakovich began his operational flying in April 2011 with the “Bounty Hunters” of VFA-2 and deployed aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. In April 2014, CDR Jakovich rejoined the VFA-122 “Flying Eagles” as an Instructor Pilot, Landing Signal Officer, and Demonstration Pilot. CDR Jakovich joined Carrier Air Wing SEVEN as an Air Wing Landing Signal Officer in February 2017 where he deployed aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) in support of Operation FREEDOM SENTINEL.
Upon selection for operational Department Head, CDR Jakovich reported to the VFA-103 “Jolly Rogers” in August 2019, where he served as an Admin Officer, Safety Officer, and Maintenance Officer. While at VFA-103, he deployed aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) in support of Operations FREEDOM SENTINEL and INHERENT RESOLVE.
Following his Department Head tour, CDR Jakovich received orders to NORAD and USNORTHCOM in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in January 2022. While there, he served as a Missile Domain Chief, Battle Captain, and senior evaluator in the Joint Operations Center, responsible for air, land, and maritime defense operations throughout the NORTHCOM Area of Responsibility. CDR Jakovich was selected for squadron command in March 2022.
Throughout his service, CDR Jakovich has participated in operations worldwide and has accumulated over 2,500 flight hours and more than 600 carrier-arrested landings. He also holds a Master’s in Military Operational Art and Science from the United States Air Force Air Command and Staff College. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and various service awards and ribbons.
