Commander John Butler
Executive Officer, Airborne Command & Control Squadron (VAW) 113

A native of Chantilly, Virginia, Commander Butler graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2008, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History. CDR Butler was commissioned through Officer Candidate School and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in March 2009. He earned his Naval Flight Officer Wings from the Fleet Replacement Squadron, VAW-120 “Greyhawks” in June 2011.
CDR Butler began his operational flying in September 2011 with the “Bluetails” of VAW-121. While a “Bluetail”, he made two deployments aboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69), participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. During this tour, CDR Butler served as the Legal Officer, Aircraft Division Officer, and NATOPS Officer.
CDR Butler reported to the Fleet Replacement Squadron, VAW-120, as an instructor. During this tour, he served as the Legal Officer, Schedules Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer. He was selected as the VAW-120 NFO Instructor of the Year.
CDR Butler then reported to USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) as the Operations Administrative Officer and did one deployment while serving as the Officer of the Deck Underway.
CDR Butler then reported as a Department Head to VAW-115, the “Liberty Bells”. While with the Liberty Bells, he completed one deployment aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71), serving as Safety, Administrative, and Maintenance Officers.
Following his department head tour, CDR Butler served as the VAW/VUQ/VTJ Placement Officer in PERS-43. While on serving at COMNAVPERSCOM, he directly supported manning the fleet and training commands with replacement aviators and instructors.
CDR Butler has accumulated over 1,500 flight hours in the E-2 Hawkeye. His awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various service awards and ribbons.
