Commander Joel Voss

CDR Voss is a native of Holliston, MA and a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation in 2002. He was commissioned as an Ensign in June, 2002 and was designated a Naval Aviator in July, 2004. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from San Diego State University in August, 2015 and completed JPME Phase I at the U.S. Air Force Air Command and Staff College in August, 2020.

Following H-60F/H Fleet Replacement Pilot training with the "Warhawks" of HS-10 in San Diego, CA, CDR Voss reported to the "Eightballers" of HS-8 in May 2005. He deployed aboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) and USS JOHN C STENNIS (CVN-74), supporting Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. While at HS-8, CDR Voss served as the Training Officer, Quality Assurance Officer (QAO), and Tactics Officer.  He was recognized as the 2008 HS-8 Pilot of the Year.

In 2008, CDR Voss reported to the “Merlins” of HSC-3 as an MH-60S Instructor Pilot where he served as the Curriculum Model Manager and Assistant Operations Officer.  While at HSC-3, CDR Voss was recognized as a recipient of the Commander, U.S. Naval Air Forces Leadership award. 

In April of 2011, CDR Voss reported to the "Firehawks" of HSC-85 in San Diego, CA.  He completed numerous exercises throughout North America in support of USSOCOM objectives.  While at HSC-85, he served as the Aircraft Division Officer and Assistant Operations Officer.  In March, 2013, CDR Voss deployed to the CENTCOM area of responsibility with the “Red Wolves” of HSC-84.  He served as the detachment Assistant Operations Officer and Quality Assurance Officer. 

In October, 2013 CDR Voss transitioned to the Selected Reserves and was assigned back to the “Firehawks” of HSC-85 where he served as the Reserve Safety and Operations Officer.  In October, 2015, CDR Voss volunteered for an extended period of active duty and reported to Commander, Maritime Support Wing (MSW) in San Diego, CA.  While at MSW, Commander Voss managed the Safety and Training programs of four P-3 and H-60 reserve squadrons and 11 Squadron Augment Units (SAU). 

In June, 2019 CDR Voss deployed as the HSC-85 Detachment ONE Officer-in-Charge.  This was the first HSC-85 deployment following the transition from the HH-60H to the MH-60S.  The detachment provided direct support to Special Operations Command Pacific (SOCPAC) objectives in the INDOPACOM area of responsibility.  In January, 2020 CDR Voss was assigned as the Executive Officer of HSC-85.

CDR Voss’ decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Air Force Commendation Medal (one award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and other various campaign, unit, and individual awards. CDR Voss has accumulated over 2,500 hours in the SH-60F, HH-60H, and MH-60S.
