Commander Sean Kinney
Commanding Officer, Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 1

Commander Sean M. Kinney hails for South-east Missouri and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2006 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Winged as a Naval Flight Officer at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas in November of 2007, CDR Kinney then completed P-3 flight training at Patrol Squadron THIRTY in Jackson, FL.
His first Operational tour was with VQ-2 in NAS Whidbey Island where he deployed to the 4
th
, 5ht, and 6
th
Fleet Area of Responsibility. In August 2011, CDR Kinney joined CTF-72, located in Misawa, Japan. While there, he served as the Sensitive Reconnaissance Operations Officer and Deputy Current Operations Officer.
CDR Kinney transferred to USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT in April of 2014. He served as the OPSADMIN Officer and Officer of the Deck (Underway) and Deployed to the 5
th
Fleet AOR supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. While aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT, he completed an
around-the-world cruise, and returned from deployment. He then completed a cross-deck transfer to USS GEORGE WASHINGTON, and completed his sea tour.
He then transferred to VP-30 in June of 2016 and served as a Pre-Department Head. He qualified as a P-3 FRS NFO Instructor and served as the Command Service Officer and the Instructional System Development Officer.
He was selected for Department head in October of 2017 to serve as Administrative Officer and the Operation Officer of VQ-1. He deployed and served as the OIC of Detachments at Isa AB, Bahrain, NAS Souda Bay, Greece, and NS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Following his Department head tour, CDR Kinney reported to Naval Personnel Command in Millington, TN where he served as the VQ Detailer and VQ/VT/CNATRA Placement Officer. He selected for squadron command in February of 2021 and reported to VQ-1 as Executive Officer in May of 2021, assuming command in June 2023.
CDR Kinney’s awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal (4 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various service awards and ribbons.
