Commander Timothy Barnikel

A native of Long Island, New York, Commander Tim “Dozer” Barnikel received his commission in 2007 from the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering. He also holds Master’s degrees in Business Administration and in Industrial System Engineering from the University of Florida and an Associate degree in foreign language studies. Commander Barnikel earned his “Wings of Gold” in January 2009 and has since accumulated over 2,850 flight hours in various naval aircraft.
 
Commander Barnikel’s operational assignments include HSL-42 “Proud Warriors” where he deployed to FIFTH FLEET aboard USS HALYBURTON (FFG 40) and USS WINSTON S CHURCHILL (DDG 81) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and counter-piracy operations; DECIMA ESQUADRILLA, where he served as a Professional Exchange Pilot in Rota, Spain and deployed aboard BLAS DE LEZO (F103); HSM-37 “Easy Riders” where he served as Officer in Charge of Detachment TWO aboard USS PREBLE (DDG 88) and deployed to FOURTH FLEET in support of Counter Narcotic Operations.  He also served as the squadron’s training, operations and maintenance officer.
 
Commander Barnikel’s shore assignments include HSM-40 “Airwolves,” where he served as an MH-60R instructor pilot and Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic, NATOPS Evaluator.  Additionally, he was assigned to United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) where he served as a member of the J8 Requirement and Resources Directorate and was responsible for the future capabilities of the Joint Force in the Indo-Pacific Area of Responsibility. 
 
His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3), and various unit and campaign awards. He and his loving wife, Taylor have 2 children, Emerie (10) and Greyson (6).
