Commander Matthew D. Boyce, a native of Spokane, Washington, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2005 where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.  He was designated a naval aviator in 2007.  Additionally, he holds a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College and a Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of Belgrade.

Commander Boyce’s operational sea duty assignments include the “Sea Knights” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO TWO (HSC-22) as a junior officer and again at HSC-22 for his department head tour, serving as safety and operations officer.  He deployed aboard USS BATAAN (LHD 5) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and USS FREEDOM (LCS 1) in support of RIMPAC 2010.  He served as helicopter detachment officer-in-charge (OIC) aboard USNS ROBERT E. PEARY (T-AKE 5) in support of Exercise JOINT WARRIOR 2017 and USS WASP (LHD 1) in support of Defense Support of Civilian Authorities (DSCA) relief operations in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico in addition to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations (HADR) on the island of Dominica following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.  

Commander Boyce’s shore assignments include the “Fleet Angels” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO (HSC-2) as a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) Instructor Pilot where he deployed aboard USS SAN ANTONIO (LPD 17) for DSCA relief efforts following Hurricane Sandy, Flag Aide to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations Warfare Systems (OPNAV N9), and 2019 Olmsted Scholar at the University of Belgrade in Belgrade, Serbia.

Selected for operational aviation command, he reported to Fleet Logistics Multi-Mission Wing located in San Diego, California in August 2021 for transition to the CMV-22B Osprey and to Fleet Logistics Multi-Mission Squadron FOUR ZERO in March 2022 as the first Commanding Officer.

Commander Boyce has accumulated over 2,100 flight hours.  His awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy Achievement Medal, and various other personal, unit, and service awards.
