CDR Boland reported to his first operational squadron with the “Fighting Marlins” of VP-40, homeported in NAS Whidbey Island, WA, in June 2011. During two deployments to the C7F AOR and one to the C5F AOR, CDR Boland qualified as Tactical Coordinator, Mission Commander, and Instructor TACCO. His ground jobs included serving as Legal Officer, Readiness Officer, NFO NATOPS Officer and NFO Training Officer.
CDR Boland transferred to the “Pro’s Nest” of VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville, FL in August 2014 and transitioned to the P-8A, qualifying as FRS Instructor TACCO and Fleet Instructor Under Training Instructor. While assigned to VP-30, he served as West Coast P-8A Transition Lead NFO, Assistant NFO Training and Avionics and Armament Division Officer, and earned his Executive Masters in Business Administration through the Naval Post Graduate School.
After a successful tour at the FRS, CDR Boland transferred to USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in San Diego, CA, in August 2017. He served as Assistant Operations Officer and Command Security manager, as well as qualifying as Officer of the Deck Underway. While on board, he conducted one deployment to C7F and two Sustainment Exercises, as well as Exercise Rim of the Pacific 2018. In January 2019, he was part of the team that saw the CARL VINSON moor pier-side in Bremerton, WA, following a homeport shift for planned maintenance.
Upon his selection for Department Head, CDR Boland reported to the “Golden Eagles” of VP-9 in Whidbey Island, WA, in January 2020. Department Head jobs included Tactics Officer, Task Group Operations Officer, Administration Officer, Maintenance Officer and Operations Officer. During his tour, he was nominated by his peers and awarded the 2021 Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award.
CDR Boland reported to CTF 57 in June 2022 and served as the N5 Plans, Engagements and Exercises Department Head and the N3 Operations Department Head. He selected for Operational Command in March 2023 and will report to the “Skinny Dragons” of VP-4 in 2025.
He is the recipient of one Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, though is proudest of the numerous unit commendations and service awards that are a testament to the skilled professionals he has had the privilege to serve with.
CDR Boland is lucky enough to have been married to Rachel (Shaffer) Boland since March 2011. They have three wonderful children: Eliza (11), Gwen (9) and Tommy (7).
