Upon completion of basic training, he completed AMH “A” School and reported to Fighter Squadron Two (VF-2) in Miramar California where he completed two deployments to the 5th and 7th Fleet AOR. He was selected for the Seaman to Admiral program, and in 2007, he graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, where he received his commission through the Naval ROTC program. He was designated as an E-2 Hawkeye Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in 2009. His operational sea duty assignments include the “Screwtops” of Carrier Airborne Command and Control Squadron (VAW) 123 where he was the line division officer, assistant training officer, and assistant Operations Officer. He was selected to serve as the Airborne Early Warning staff member attached to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 completing a deployment to the 6th and 5th Fleet AOR. CDR Armstrong reported to the VAW-121 “Bluetails” in 2019 where he served as the Safety Officer, Admin Officer, Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer during an around the world 10-month deployment. Armstrong has held shore duty assignments as a NFO Instructor at the Fleet Replacement Squadron “Greyhawks” of VAW-120. He also attended Naval War College in Newport, RI where he received his Master’s of Arts degree in Defense and Strategic Studies. Most recently, he was assigned to the European Command Headquarters in Stuttgart Germany serving in the Plans/Policy division with a focus on NATO. CDR Armstrong assumed Executive Officer duties of VAW-115 while underway during the 2024 WESTPAC deployment. CDR Armstrong has accumulated over 2,500 flight hours in three variants of the E-2 Hawkeye and has over 300 carrier arrested landings. His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (strike/flight award), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
