He commissioned through the NROTC program and entered Naval Flight Officer training at NAS Pensacola, FL. He then reported to the VAW-120 “Greyhawks” for FRS training in the E-2C Hawkeye and earned his Wings of Gold in April 2009. In 2009, he reported to the VAW-125 “Tigertails” in Norfolk, VA. During this tour, he graduated from the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and the Advanced Airborne Mission Commander Course (AMCC), flew HADR missions in support of Operation UNIFIED RESPONSE, and completed two WESTPAC deployments in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM with Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN (CVW-17) aboard the USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70). In 2012, he reported to the VAW-120 “Greyhawks” in Norfolk, VA for instructor duty. He served as the Assistant Air Intercept Control Phase Head, Weapons and Tactics Phase Head, and Student Control Department Head. In 2015, he reported to Carrier Air Wing EIGHT (CVW-8) in Virginia Beach, VA as the C4I Officer. During this tour, he flew missions in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE aboard the USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN 77). In 2017, Commander Medalla was selected for Aviation Department Head and reported to the VAW-126 “Seahawks “in Norfolk, VA. He deployed with Carrier Air Wing ONE (CVW-1) aboard the USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) supporting operations in the U.S. 2nd, 5th, and 6th Fleet areas of operations. In 2020, Commander Medalla reported to Joint Staff Hampton Roads for his joint duty assignment with the Deputy Directorate for Regional Operations, Joint Chiefs of Staff, J-35. He served as the Secretary of Defense Orders Writer, Logistics Joint Working Group Lead, and Aviation Joint Working Group Lead. Commander Medalla has accumulated over 1,900 flight hours in the E-2 Hawkeye. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (2x Awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3x awards), Navy Achievement Medal (3x awards), and various unit, campaign, and service awards and was selected as the 2012 Hawkeye Naval Flight Officer of the Year.
