He was commissioned through the Navy Officer Candidate School and commenced flight training at NAS Pensacola, Florida, in July 2009. CDR Brodersen was designated a U.S. Naval Aviator in December 2011 and subsequently reported to the VAQ 129 “Vikings” for initial fleet training as an EA-18G pilot at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, in January 2012. In February 2012, CDR Brodersen started his first operational tour with the “Black Ravens” of VAQ 135. During his tenure with the “Black Ravens,” he completed one expeditionary deployment to the USINDOPACOM area of responsibility (AOR). Following this deployment, he reported to HAVOC to attend the Airborne Electronic Attack Weapon School Course. After graduation, he reported to the Electronic Attack Weapon School at NAS Whidbey Island, where he received the distinction of Electronic Attack Weapons School Instructor of the Year in 2017. In December 2017, CDR Brodersen joined the “Gray Wolves” of VAQ-142 and served as the squadron training officer aboard the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT attached to CSG-11 and CVW-11. He led the Gray Wolves through comprehensive workups in 2019 in preparation for CSG-11’s deployment to the USINDOPACOM AOR in January 2020. In January 2020, he reported to the Naval War College at NS Newport, Rhode Island, where he earned a Master's Degree in Defense and Strategic Studies, graduating in March 2021. Upon his return to the fleet, CDR Brodersen assumed the role of a Department Head in the “Black Ravens,” of VAQ-135 for the second time in July 2021. During this assignment, he completed a deployment to the USINDOPACOM AOR, serving as both Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer. His exemplary leadership during this period resulted in him receiving the 2022 Navy and Marine Corps Leadership Award at the annual Tailhook convention. After concluding his department head tour, CDR Brodersen served as the N10A at the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center, where he was responsible for the EA-18G Weapons Tactics Instructor course and EA-18G tactics development. While on staff at HAVOC, he collaborated with N98, PMA-234, PMA-265, and various program offices to help codify future EA-18G capabilities. CDR Brodersen has accumulated over 1,800 flight hours in the EA-18G and FA-18. His accolades include the Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award in 2022, Growler Tactics Instructor of the Year in 2019, and EAWS Instructor of the Year in 2017. His service awards also encompass a Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medals (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals (2 awards), and various service awards and ribbons.
