He is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and was commissioned via the NROTC program in 2004. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Social and Public Policy from Georgetown. CDR Lunsford completed flight training assignments with VT-4 and the 562nd Flight Training Squadron and received his Naval Flight Officer wings in March 2006. In February 2007, CDR Lunsford reported to the VQ-2 “Rangers” in Whidbey Island, Washington. While assigned to VQ-2, CDR Lunsford deployed five times to CENTCOM in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM, once to SOUTHCOM in support of Operation INCA GOLD, and participated in several joint and fleet exercises. CDR Lunsford qualified as Navigator, Tactical Evaluator, Senior Evaluator, and Electronic Warfare Mission Commander. He also served as VQ-2’s NFO NATOPS Officer and was designated as the Navy’s EP-3 Fleet NFO NATOPS Evaluator. CDR Lunsford was named VQ-2’s NFO of the Year for 2009. Following his initial sea tour, CDR Lunsford reported to the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC where he served as a TITAN Operations Officer at the Defense Intelligence Operations Coordination Center and as an action officer for DIA’s Global Force Management office. In February 2013, CDR Lunsford reported to the USS RONALD REAGAN in San Diego, California where he served as the Assistant Navigator and Navigation Division Officer, and qualified as Officer of the Deck (Underway), Officer of the Deck (Inport), and Assistant Command Duty Officer. In April 2015, CDR Lunsford returned to Whidbey Island for his Department Head tour with the VQ-1 “World Watchers.” While assigned to VQ-1, CDR Lunsford deployed as the Officer- in-Charge for Commander Task Groups 67.4 in EUCOM and 57.1 in CENTCOM, and also served as the squadron’s Training Officer and Maintenance Officer. CDR Lunsford reported to the Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy for Policy staff in Washington, DC in December 2017 and served as an Operations Support action officer for the Integration Support Directorate. CDR Lunsford returned to VQ-1 in 2019 to serve as the squadron’s Executive Officer. CDR Lunsford has logged over 1900 hours in the EP-3E. His personal awards include the Air Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.
