Detachments VRC-30 deploys using the detachment concept. There are four detachments based at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, CA and one permanently forward deployed to Atsugi, Japan. Each detachment utilizes two aircraft to accomplish the Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD) mission for their assigned Pacific Fleet Strike Group. The COD mission includes the transport of high priority parts, general cargo, mail, and passengers, including distinguished visitors encompassing U.S. and foreign diplomats and dignitaries. Each detachment is usually manned with seven pilots, one maintenance officer, and 34 enlisted personnel, including six enlisted aircrew/crew chiefs. Detachment ONE In 2015, Detachment ONE successfully completed an unparalleled nine and a half month deployment that provided the USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70)/CVW-17/CSG-1 team with combat logistics support throughout the FIFTH and SEVENTH Fleets Area of Responsibilities, and supported FS CHARLES DE GUALLE (R91) for three months of joint carrier operations across the North Arabian Gulf. Missions were planned and executed into and out of Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, Malaysia, Brunei, Australia, and Guam. Throughout 2015, Detachment ONE successfully moved 5,581 passengers, 754 DVs, 116,100 pounds of mail, and 858,030 pounds of cargo, while executing 22 life-saving medical evacuations. The "Hustlers" of Detachment ONE were awarded the 2015 CVW-17 Golden Wrench Award for Maintenance Excellence for achieving a 96 percent sortie completion rate while operating at a high operational tempo. In theater, Detachment ONE received well above average marks during their mid-cruise Material Condition Inspection (MCI) to include several accolades for maintenance personnel. Over the course of deployment, the detachment executed an unprecedented swap of six pilots without interrupting or impeding operations. Detachment ONE closed the deployment with yet another successful MCI where each aircraft had a 50 percent reduction in maintenance discrepancies from the previous inspection, demonstrating Detachment ONE's commitment to maintenance professionalism. While returning to San Diego, Detachment ONE personnel operated forward logistics sites out of Royal Australian Air Force Base Pearce, Perth, Western Australia and Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, Hawaii. Detachment TWO Detachment TWO conducted a unique "Southern Seas" deployment with Carrier Air Wing TWO (CVW-2) and Carrier Strike Group NINE (CSG-9) aboard the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) departing from Naval Air Station North Island in September 2015 and flying off of the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) in December 2015. The detachment worked from seven Forward Logistics Sites in Panama, Columbia, Chile, Brazil, and Puerto Rico, while also conducting logistics support missions in Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay and the Bahamas. In the FOURTH Fleet area of responsibilities (AOR), Detachment TWO supported UNITAS PAC, UNITAS LANT and Operation Blue Sky V by moving high priority parts, cargo, mail, personnel and notable distinguished visitors including several U.S. Ambassadors and high ranking foreign military members. Among the DVs was The Honorable Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy. The detachment flew 186 sorties totaling 334.7 hours and transported 435 distinguished visitors, 1,342 passengers, 277,580 pounds of cargo, 15,450 pounds of mail, and performed 9 lifesaving medical evacuation/emergency leave missions with an overall 98 percent sortie completion rate. Additionally, Detachment TWO planned and executed a Pan-American mission spanning 4,500 miles from Houston, Texas to Santiago, Chile to replace a C-2A aircraft. Based on the rigorous training of Fleet Logistics aircrews, Detachment TWO was able to quickly and precisely coordinate with foreign embassies the necessary clearances to fly into several unfamiliar airfields along the route to refuel and rest. The knowledge and adaptability of the aircrew was essential to completing the flight and enabling CVW-2 to fulfill their mission requirements. Detachment TWO will deploy once again in 2017. Detachment THREE Detachment THREE relentlessly excelled throughout their COMPTUEX, SUSTEX, and WESTPAC/OEF/MED deployment with Carrier Air Wing ELEVEN onboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) from APR-DEC 2013. The detachment served through two deployment extensions and flew over 1,023 hours. They safely transported an impressive 1,591 Distinguished Visitors, 4,425 passengers, 831,268 pounds of cargo, 75,405 pounds of mail, and 19 MEDEVACS. While deployed, Detachment THREE spent five months in the FIFTH Fleet AOR in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and conducted Red Sea Operations. Detachment THREE operated from Forward Logistics Sites in Hawaii, Japan, Singapore, Bahrain, and Italy and provided support from South Korea, Qatar, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and Greece. Detachment THREE will be stood up once again for deployment in 2017. Detachment FOUR Detachment FOUR completed an exceptionally successful seven month deployment with Carrier Strike Group THREE in support of exercise WESTPAC and RIMPAC onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74) from JAN-AUG 2016. They skillfully flew 766 flight hours through seven Forward Logistic Sites and two Areas of Responsibility and completed 420 of the 429 scheduled sorties, yielding a 97.9 percent sortie completion rate. The "Horsemen" successfully transported 2,033 passengers, 1,307 Distinguished Visitors, 369,806 pounds of high priority cargo, and 62,571 pounds of mail. Detachment FOUR supported an aggressive Commander, Naval Air Forces Distinguished Visitor program concurrent with operational requirements, notably transporting U.S. Ambassadors to Brunei, China, and Singapore, numerous Senators, Governors, and U.S. Representatives, High Commissioners of Australia and New Zealand, Deputy Minister of Defense of Brunei, Commander of the Royal Brunei Navy, Chilean Chief of Naval Operations, Chilean and Indian Ambassadors to the U.S., Republic of Korea Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Philippines Secretary of National Defense, Malaysian Deputy Undersecretary for Policy, the Vice President of the United States staff, U.S. Secretary of Defense Staff, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness, U.S. Undersecretary of the Navy, U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, and the Commander, U.S. Forces Korea. Detachment FIVE Detachment FIVE continued its tradition of excellence as VRC-30's permanently forward-deployed detachment in 2016. Detachment FIVE provided combat logistics support to the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76), and Commander, Task Force SEVEN ZERO during normal operations and two exercises, VALIANT SHIELD and KEEN SWORD. Over the course of five deployed months, Detachment FIVE's aircraft carried over 330,000 pounds of mail and cargo, transported 2,968 passengers and 392 DVs, all while accruing 445 mishap-free flight hours over 278 sorties. Detachment personnel worked from seven Forward Logistics Sites including Okinawa, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Korea, and Guam. These milestones were accomplished while simultaneously troubleshooting complex maintenance issues including a center console pedestal change, which required countless hours of troubleshooting and replacement of nearly every component of the NP2K system. The detachment completed a successful Commander Airborne Command Control and Logistics Wing Aviation Maintenance Program assist (AMP), MCI, and a Command Safety Assessment (CSA). During non-deployed operations, Detachment FIVE received a new aircraft from a home guard TRANSPAC crew. Detachment FIVE continues to be an unrivalled fleet support detachment and is the quarterdeck of the SEVENTH Fleet Carrier Task Force.
