Commander Charles "Rizzo-" Waltman

Raised in San Antonio, Texas, Commander Charles “Rizzo-” Waltman graduated from the Naval Academy in May of 2004, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Naval Architecture.  After earning his Naval Aviator Wings in April 2007, he reported to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 122 in Lemoore, CA for initial fleet training in the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

CDR Waltman began his operational flying in February 2008 with the “Fighting Redcocks” of VFA-22.  During that tour he made two deployments aboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) and one deployment aboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF).  

In June 2011, CDR Waltman graduated TOPGUN and reported to the “Outlaws” of Strike Fighter Weapons School Pacific as a Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor.  CDR Waltman returned to the fleet in 2013 as Training Officer with the VFA-154 “Black Knights.”  During his two years with the Knights he deployed aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) in support of OEF.

CDR Waltman departed the Knights to deploy with the VFA-81 “Sunliners” aboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.   Following his time with the Liners, he reported to the “Fighting Redcocks” of VFA-22 in April 2015 as a Department Head.  In November 2017 he attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI.

CDR Waltman has accumulated over 2,600 flight hours, over 600 carrier arrested landings, and over 60 combat missions. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Strike/Flight Air Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards) and other campaign and service ribbons.
