Commanding Officer, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 6

23 October 2020 CDR Charles Chmielak was raised in Posen, IL and graduated from Bremen High School in 1997. He attended the United States Naval Academy earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in History and his commission in May, 2001. He entered flight training and earned his Wings of Gold in May 2003, then reported to the "Warhawks" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 10 (HS-10) in San Diego for initial fleet training as a SH-60F and HH-60H helicopter pilot.

In March 2004, he reported to the world famous "Dragon Slayers" of HS-11 in Jacksonville, Florida. During this tour the squadron earned the coveted "Battle E" and deployed onboard the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM, including a detachment to Basrah, Iraq.

In June 2007 he reported to HS-10 Expeditionary Sea Combat Unit TWO deploying onboard the USNS GYGST FRED W STOCKHAM flying in support of JOINT SPECIAL OPERATIONS TASK FORCE - PHILIPPINES and JOINT TASK FORCE 515. He took follow on orders to shore duty at HS-10 to serve as an FRS Instructor Pilot. In February 2010 he reported as Aide to Commander, Navy Region Hawaii / Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific (MIDPAC) at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

CDR Chmielak returned to San Diego in 2012, reporting to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 3 (HSC-3) for qualification in the MH-60S. He joined the "Eightballers" of HSC-8 in August of 2012 as a Department Head, deploying aboard the JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74). The squadron earned the "Battle E," CNO Aviation Safety Award, Blue "M", and the Sikorsky Maintenance Award. Following this tour, CDR Chmielak was assigned to US AFRICA COMMAND in Stuttgart, Germany in June 2015 serving as a Branch Chief in the J9 and in support of the Multinational Cooperation Center in the J5.

CDR Chmielak holds a Masters in Aeronautical Science Degree from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and his personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (1), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), the Joint Service Achievement Medal (2), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), and various campaign, service and unit awards. He has flown more than 2200 hours in H-60 aircraft.
