Commander Michael Stengel

Executive Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 133

24 October 2020 Commander Stengel grew up in both Colorado and San Diego, CA.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from San Diego State University and was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 2004.  After completion of flight training at NAS Pensacola, Vance AFB, and NAS Meridian, Commander Stengel was designated a Naval Aviator in October 2006 and received orders to the “Gladiators” of VFA-106 in Virginia Beach, VA for initial training in the  FA-18E/F Super Hornet.
 
Upon completion of the FRS, he reported to the “Pukin’ Dogs” of VFA-143 where he deployed twice to the CENTCOM AOR aboard the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

In the fall of 2010, Commander Stengel reported back to the “Gladiators” of VFA-106 as an instructor pilot in the FA-18A/B/C/D/E/F and was the Carrier Qualification Phase Head.  In March 2013, he received orders to  Naval Air Facility Atsugi as Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW-5) Landing Signals Officer. He deployed three times aboard the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) to the Western Pacific AOR in support of PACOM tasking.
 
In 2015 he reported to the “Vikings” of VAQ-129 for an Airborne Electronic Attack syllabus in the EA-18G Growler prior to joining the “Black Ravens” of VAQ-135 in April 2016.  As a Department Head, he deployed to Misawa Air Base, Japan in support of PACOM tasking and served as the Safety Officer, Administration Officer, Operations Officer, and Maintenance officer.  Following his Department Head tour in October 2018, Commander Stengel was assigned to the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Defense and Strategic Studies.

Commander Stengel has accumulated over 2,400 flight hours, and 453 carrier arrested landings. His awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal(3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 Awards), and various campaign, service, and unit awards.
