Commander Matthew McCormick

Executive Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 137

24 October 2020 A native of Garland, Texas, Commander McCormick graduated from Austin College in 2001, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology. CDR McCormick was commissioned through the Officer Candidate School and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in June 2004. He earned his Naval Flight Officer Wings in October 2005. In December 2005, CDR McCormick reported to the VAQ 129 “Vikings” for initial fleet training as an EA-6B Electronic Countermeasures Officer. Following initial fleet training, CDR Navy was selected as the Student Naval Flight Officer of the year for 2006.

CDR McCormick began his operational flying in January 2007 with the “Cougars” of VAQ 139. While a “Cougar”, he made three deployments aboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. During this tour CDR McCormick was selected for the VAQ 139 Junior Officer Leadership award.

CDR McCormick attended and graduated the Electronic Attack Weapons School Prowler Tactics Instructor course before returning to the “Vikings” of VAQ-129 to transition to the EA-18G Growler and for instructor duty as an Instructor Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) starting in June 2010. In March 2013 CDR McCormick returned to flying the venerable EA-6B Prowler as part of Carrier Air Wing Eleven staff where he deployed onboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

CDR McCormick remained in CVW-11 for his Department Head tour in VAQ-142, the “Gray Wolves”. While with the Gray Wolves, he brought the squadron through transition to the EA-18G Growler and prepared them for their 2017 deployment onboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) serving as Safety Officer, Operations Officer, and Maintenance Officer.

Following his department head tour, CDR McCormick was served as the Assistant Department Head (N10A) at the Airborne Electronic Attack Weapons School (HAVOC), part of the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC) at NAS Fallon. There he facilitated the execution of and instructed for the Growler Tactics Instructor (GTI) course. He selected for squadron command in March 2018 and is scheduled to report to the World Famous VAQ-137 “Rooks” as Executive Officer in August 2020.

CDR McCormick has accumulated 1,039 flight hours in the EA-6B, over 1,100 hours in the EA-18G, and 457 carrier arrested landings, including 51 combat missions. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various service awards and ribbons. He currently lives in Anacortes, Washington with his wife and their three children.
