Commander Matthew T. Mulcahey

Commanding Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 138

24 October 2020 CDR Mulcahey is a native of Kingwood, TX. He graduated from Texas A&M University in May 2001, where he earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering and commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps. Earning his "wings of gold" as a Naval Flight Officer in August 2002 at NAS Pensacola, he was selected for assignment to the EA-6B Prowler at NAS Whidbey Island, WA.

In October 2003, CDR Mulcahey was assigned to the VAQ-135 "Black Ravens" as an Electronic Countermeasures Officer (ECMO). His tour included his first deployment aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) in May 2005, supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

In January 2007, CDR Mulcahey reported to the "Vikings" of VAQ-129 for duty as an instructor ECMO at the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS). He was selected as the 2009 FRS Instructor ECMO of the Year. He was subsequently sent to the Electronic Attack Weapons School for training as a Prowler Weapons and Tactics Instructor (PTI).

In January 2010, CDR Mulcahey reported to the "Lancers" of VAQ-131 as their Training Officer. His tour included deployment aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) in September 2010 in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN. He was awarded the 2010 Navy and Marine Corps Association Junior Officer Leadership Award.

CDR Mulcahey attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI from November 2011 to November 2012 where he earned a Master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies while completing Joint Professional Military Education I. In February 2013, he joined the "Gray Wolves" of VAQ-142 serving as Operations and Maintenance Officer. He deployed again aboard USS NIMITZ in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and contingency operations in response to crisis in Syria.

CDR Mulcahey reported to the Naval Personnel Command in Millington, TN as the VAQ Community Detailer in February 2015. While in Millington, CDR Mulcahey was selected for Operational VAQ Command.

He joined the VAQ-138 "Yellow Jackets" as Executive Officer in June of 2018. As XO he led a 7-month deployment to the 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR), participating in numerous Joint Operations with Allied Nations. In July 2019, CDR Mulcahey took the helm as Commanding Officer of VAQ-138 at a ceremony in Oak Harbor, WA.

CDR Mulcahey has accumulated over 2,500 flight hours and over 500 carrier arrested landings across multiple airframes. His awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various campaign and service awards.
