Commander Christopher “POT” Rowan

Commanding Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 140

25 October 2020 Commander Rowan is a native of Waco, Texas.  He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May of 2001 and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for training in September 2001.  He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in December 2002 and began initial training in the EA-6B Prowler with the “Vikings” of VAQ-129 in March 2003.

In April 2004, CDR Rowan reported to the Shadowhawks of VAQ-141.  He served as Ground Safety Officer, Material Control Officer, Operations Training Officer, NATOPS Officer and Safety Officer.  As a Shadowhawk, he made one deployment in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and one deployment to the PACOM Area of Operations. 

In January 2008, CDR Rowan began training in the F/A-18 with the VFA-106 Gladiators.  After his training was complete, he remained on staff as an instructor as well as serving as Scheduling Officer.  In July 2009, CDR Rowan transferred back to VAQ-129 as part of the initial cadre of EA-18G Growler instructors.  While with the Vikings, he was the Aviation/Armament Division Officer and the Fighter Phase Head.  In April 2011, CDR Rowan was selected as the Flag Aide for Commander, THIRD Fleet in San Diego, CA.  While serving as the Flag Aide, CDR Rowan participated in many joint and coalition exercises, including RIMPAC 2012, as well as multiple fleet engagement opportunities. 

In October 2012, CDR Rowan reported back to VAQ-129 for refresher training and then checked in to VAQ-139 Cougars in April 2013 for his Department Head tour in the EA-18G Growler.  While with the Cougars, CDR Rowan deployed in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.  He served as Safety, Administration, Operations and Maintenance Officer.  In November 2015, CDR Rowan transferred to the Pentagon and worked for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the J-6 directorate.  In May 2019, CDR Rowan reported to America’s Growler Squadron, the VAQ-140 Patriots, to serve as the Executive Officer, where his leadership was crucial to the squadron’s deployment aboard the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN72) in 2019 and early 2020. After getting back from deployment CDR Rowan continued to serve as Commanding Officer of VAQ-140 Patriots.

CDR Rowan has accumulated over 2500 flight hours in multiple aircraft.  His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Bronze Star, Air Medal Strike Flight Award (4), Navy Commendation Medal (2) and the Navy Achievement Medal as well as multiple campaign medals.  He is married and has three amazing children.
