26 October 2020 Master Chief Ates was born in Urania, LA and raised in Joplin, MO. He enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1997, attended basic training, and seaman apprenticeship training in Great Lakes, IL.

His operational assignments include: Amphibious dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan (April 1998-April 2001); Spruance class destroyer USS Deyo (DD 989) home ported Norfolk, VA (April 2001-February 2003); Individual Augmentee (IA) assigned to NAVESLG Forward operating at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Clark, Khowst, Afghanistan ISO OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM (February 2006-May 2007); Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE THIRTY-THREE, home ported Gulfport, MS (September 2007-April 2013)

His shore assignments include: Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS), Professional Mariner schoolhouse Great Lakes, IL (March 2003-August 2007) and Navy Personnel Command (NPC), Millington, TN (July 2013-July 2016).

In February 2016, he was selected for the Command Senior Chief program. He served as the Command Senior/Master Chief onboard the Avenger class mine countermeasure ship USS Sentry (MCM 3) forward deployed to Manama, Bahrain from August 2016 - December 2017.

Master Chief Ates assumed duties as the Command Master Chief of Strike Fighter Squadron TWO SEVEN forward deployed to Atsugi, Japan in January 2018.

Master Chief Ates is a graduate of the United States Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 173, Gold) and Command Master Chief / Chief of the Boat (CMC/COB) course. He is qualified Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS), Seabee Combat Warfare (SCW) and certified as a Master Training Specialist (MTS). His personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal (three awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
