Commander Harry C. Evans III is a native of Liverpool, New York, and a 2003 graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. While a midshipman, he attended the U.S. Military at West Point as an exchange student in the fall of 2001. Upon commissioning, he reported to flight school in Pensacola, Florida completing basic and intermediate flight training at VT-4, Naval Air Station Pensacola. He completed advanced flight training at VT-86, and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in January 2005. Following advanced jet training, CDR Evans reported to VFA-122 “Flying Eagles” in NAS Lemoore, CA for initial fleet training in the F/A- 18F Super Hornet.
After initial training in the F/A-18F, he reported to “Black Knights” of VFA-154 also at NAS Lemoore, CA in January 2006. While attached to the “Black Knights”, he deployed in 2007 with CVW-9 onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74) in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. While assigned to VFA-154, he served as a Branch Officer, Mission Planning Officer and as the Line Division Officer.
Commander Evans graduated from the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) in March 2009. He then reported to Strike Fighter Weapons School, Pacific (SFWSP) in NAS Lemoore, CA as a Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor. At SFWSP, he served as the Forward Air Controller (Airborne) (FAC(A)) Program Manager and functioned as the Strike Coordination/Armed Reconnaissance and Targeting Pod subject matter expert.
From December 2011 to May 2014, Commander Evans served at the WSO Training Officer for the “Diamondbacks” of VFA-102 at NAF Atsugi, Japan. While attached to the “Diamondbacks”, he deployed twice with CVW-5 onboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) in support of 7th Fleet Operations and participating in many multi-national exercises.
Following his tour with the “Diamondbacks”, Commander Evans graduated from the School of Aviation Safety en route to the “Black Aces” of VFA-41 for his Department Head tour. He deployed in 2016 again with CVW-9 onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74). While assigned to VFA-41, he served as Operations, Maintenance, Administrative and Safety Officer.
Commander Evans was selected as a Fellow of the first cohort of the Secretary of the Navy Tours with Industry Program (SECNAV TWI). In November 2016 he began his fellowship at Boeing in St. Louis. During his fellowship he worked on a variety of high-priority projects including H14, Advanced Cockpit System, and a Foreign Military Sales campaign.
Commander Evans has 3100 flight hours and over 800 carrier arrestments. He was awarded the Strike/Flight Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (three awards) and numerous campaign and unit medals and citations. He is also the recipient of the 2007 Van Pelt/ Morris Junior Officer Leadership Award and 2013 Diamondback Leadership Awards.
