Commander Timothy "Fluff" Hurley

Commanding Officer, Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 136

26 October 2020 A native of Alpharetta, Georgia, Commander Hurley enlisted in the Navy in June of 1996 as a Surface Sonar Technician (STG). He reached the rank of STG2 before being selected for the fleet input to Reserve Officer Training Corps commissioning program in August of 1999. In May 2002, CDR Hurley graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Management. CDR Hurley was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in December 2002. He earned his Naval Aviator Wings in May 2005. In June 2005, CDR Hurley reported to the VFA-125 “Rough Raiders” for initial fleet training as an F/A-18C Pilot.

CDR Hurley began his operational flying in April 2006 with the “Fist of the Fleet” of VFA-25.  While a “Fistie,” he made three deployments aboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF).

Upon completion of his tour with the Fist of the Fleet in 2009, CDR Hurley reported to STRIKE at the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center. During his tour at STRIKE, he attended the Navy Fighter Weapons School and completed the Strike Fighter Weapons and Tactics Instructor course (TOPGUN).  In 2012 CDR Hurley reported to the “Kestrels” of VFA-137 as the Squadron Training Officer.  During his tour with the Kestrels, he deployed in support of OEF aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).

CDR Hurley returned to the fleet as a Department Head in VFA-97, the “Warhawks.”  While with the Warhawks, he transitioned the squadron from F/A-18C to F/A-18E and completed workups aboard the USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74), serving as both Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer.  Following his department head tour, CDR Hurley was selected to return to the Naval Air Warfare Development Center as the Air Wing Training Officer.  

In November of 2017, CDR Hurley graduated from the U.S. Naval War College with distinction, earning a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies while participating in the Halsey Alfa advanced research project.  While in Newport, Rhode Island, CDR Hurley was selected for operational squadron command and slated to VFA-136 the “Knighthawks.” He report as Executive Officer in June of 2019 and assumed command in September 2020.

CDR Hurley has accumulated over 2,600 flight hours in F/A-18 A-F, and the F-16 A/B.  Additionally, he has 465 carrier arrested landings and 26 combat missions. His awards include the Strike/Flight Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards) along with various service awards and ribbons.
