Commander Kevin McNatt graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2001, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, CDR McNatt reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for Aviation Preflight Indoctrination in July 2001. From there, he reported to VT-28 at NAS Corpus Christi, TX for primary flight training in the T-34C. CDR McNatt then transferred to VT-22 at NAS Kingsville, TX for training in the T-45A. In June 2003, he arrived at VFA-122 at NAS Lemoore, CA to begin training as a replacement pilot in the FA-18E/F.
CDR McNatt began his operational flying with the Black Knights of VFA-154 in February 2004. During his time with the Black Knights, he completed an “around-the-world” combat deployment onboard the USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
After completing TOPGUN, he reported to NAWS China Lake, CA for Training Officer duty at VX-9 in October 2006. While there, he flew numerous operational test flights on software and weapons systems, and coordinated Tactics Development and Evaluation efforts with TOPGUN and the East and West Coast Weapons Schools.
In April 2009, CDR McNatt reported to VFA-25 for operational Training Officer Duty. During his two-year tour, he completed two combat deployments in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM AND NEW DAWN. After detaching from VFA-25, CDR McNatt reported to Air Command and Staff College during the summer of 2011 at Maxwell AFB, AL, where he earned a Masters degree of Military Operational Art and Science.
CDR McNatt once again returned to Lemoore, CA in the summer of 2012 to join the Warhawks of VFA-97 as an operational Department Head. While there he completed a combat deployment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, and served as the Safety, Administrative, Operations, and Maintenance Officer. As the Maintenance Officer, CDR McNatt led the squadron’s transition from Lot 12 FA-18Cs to Lot 36 FA-18Es.
Following his tour with the Warhawks, he reported for duty at U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs, CO. While there, he served as the Defense Critical Infrastructure Program Deputy Branch Chief, Mission Assurance Branch Chief, and as a watchstander in the Future Operations Center. He assumed duties as Executive Officer of the “Blue Diamonds” of VFA 146 on 24 May 2018.
CDR McNatt has accumulated over 2300 hours in the F/A-18 and other aircraft. His military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (four awards), Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Achievement Medal, and various other unit and campaign awards.
