Executive Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136

26 October 2020 Commander Brett Jones, a native of Tulare, California, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Ocean Engineering and the Air Force Institute of Technology in 2005 with a master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Upon completion of flight training and designation as a naval aviator, he reported to his initial fleet tour in 2008 with the “Yellow Jackets” of VAQ 138. With the squadron, he deployed to the Western Pacific flying the EA-6B Prowler on the USS JOHN C STENNIS (CVN 74). After transitioning to the EA-18G Growler in 2010 he deployed to Al Asad Air Base, Iraq supporting Operation NEW DAWN. During this tour, he served as the Public Affairs officer, and division officer for the Avionics/Armament and Quality Assurance divisions.

In August 2011, Jones reported to Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center in Fallon, Nevada to attend the Growler Tactics Instructor (GTI) course. Upon graduating with class 12-01, he joined the HAVOC staff where he instructed subsequent GTI courses and developed the Air-to-air Countertactics mission set furthering EA-18G tactical employment. Additionally, he instructed carrier air wings as a Suppression of Enemy Air Defense instructor.

Immediately following, he joined the “Black Ravens” of VAQ 135 in July 2014 serving as the training officer. He deployed to the Western Pacific operating from Misawa Air Base, Japan supporting multiple joint exercises in the region. In November 2015, he joined the “Patriots” of VAQ 140 and deployed on the USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN 75), supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. While with the squadron, he served as the administrations officer, safety officer, and maintenance officer.

In December 2017, he reported to the Program Executive Office, Tactical Aircraft Programs in Patuxent River, Maryland. He served as the Integrated Product Team lead for Next Generation Jammer (NGJ) Integration in the Airborne Electronic Attack program office (PMA 234) and Growler Systems Integration in the F/A-18 and EA-18G Program Office (PMA 265). He provided programmatic, engineering, and technical expertise in support of the NGJ and EA-18G Growler systems. He selected for squadron command in March 2018 and rejoined the “Yellow Jackets” of VAQ-138 as the executive officer in March 2021.

CDR Jones has accumulated more than 2,400 flight hours in six different aircraft, including more than 1,700 in the EA-18G to include 390 traps, 347.6 EA-6B flight hours and 70 total combat missions. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (3 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various service awards and ribbons.
