Commander Shannon "Cutter" Thompson

Commanding Officer, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 142

26 October 2020 Commander Thompson, a native of Florissant, Missouri, graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Operations and Technology.  She was designated a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in May 2003 and reported to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 for initial training in the EA-6B Prowler.
 
Following completion of EA-6B training, her initial fleet assignment was with the “Cougars” of VAQ-139 onboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) from June 2004 to June 2007.  While assigned to the Cougars she deployed to the WESTPAC AOR followed by a second deployment in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
 
In June 2007, CDR Thompson graduated from the Electronic Attack Weapons School (EAWS) and subsequently began her tour there as a Prowler Tactics Instructor.  While at EAWS, she was the Communications Electronic Attack subject matter expert as well as the Electronic Warfare Advanced Readiness Program coordinator.  From November 2007 until September 2008, CDR Thompson served in Iraq as an Individual Augment (IA) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM attached to both the Task Force and Joint CREW Composite Squadron – 1 (JCCS-1).  Upon completion of her IA, she returned to EAWS and continued her instructor tour.
 
In November 2011, she reported to the “Lancers” of VAQ-131 for her Department Head tour.  During this tour, she completed an eight month deployment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM while serving as the Tactics/Training, Administrative and Operations Officer.
 
In July 2014, CDR Thompson reported to the Nuclear Command and Control System Support Staff as the Chief, Nuclear Forces Branch.  She assisted with assessments focused on the strategic, operational and tactical levels for the Nuclear Command and Control enterprise.  She reported to OPNAV staff in July 2016 to work Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare (EMW).  From January 2017 until May 2017 she served as the Executive Assistant to the Director, Integrated Fires (OPNAV N2N6 F3).
 
In July 2017, CDR Thompson reported to VAQ-129 for her transition training to the EA-18G.
 
CDR Thompson’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Air Medal (strike/flight, three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various unit, service and campaign awards.
