Commander Brian Watt

Commanding Officer, Airborne Command & Control Squadron (VAW) 115

26 October 2020 A native of Lubbock, Texas, Commander Watt enlisted in the Naval Reserves in 1996 and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1998, earning a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Economics. He reported to NAS Pensacola, FL and was commissioned through the OCS Program then reported for flight training in fall of 2002. He earned his Naval Flight Officer Wings in February 2004 after he reported to the VAW-120 “Greyhawks” for initial fleet training as an E-2C Radar Officer.

CDR Watt began his operational flying in May 2004 with the “Wallbangers” of VAW-117. While a “Wallbanger”, he served as Legal Officer, Avionics Division Officer, NFO Training and NFO NATOPS Officer. He made two deployments aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68), participating in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

CDR Watt reported to Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center, Fallon Nevada and the N6 department and served as a Weapons and Tactics Instructor for Carrier Airborne Early Warning and Weapons School from May 2007 to March 2010. In April of 2010, he reported back to the “Wallbangers” and served as Training Officer until January 2011. He was then selected to attend the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island where he earned a Masters and participated in the Halsey Group.

CDR Watt returned to the fleet as a De partment Head in VAW-116, the “Sun Kings” in April 2013. While with the Sun Kings, he deployed aboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) in support of OPERATION INHERANT RESOLVE, serving as Quality Assurance Officer, Safety Officer, and Operations Officer.

Following his department head tour, CDR Watt served as an action officer, Joint Staff, J-7 Directorate at the Pentagon. While on the Joint Staff, he directly supported the Chairman’s Crisis response team and counter-extremism cross functional teams.

CDR Watt has accumulated over 2,400 flight hours in four different aircraft and over 400 carrier arrested landings. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (1 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards) and various service awards and ribbons.
