Commander Phillip Sheridan

Commanding Officer, Airborne Command & Control Squadron (VAW) 116

26 October 2020 Commander Phillip J. Sheridan, A native of Melbourne Beach, FL, graduated from Jacksonville University in 2003 with a B.S in Political Science and upon commissioning began flight training at NAS Pensacola, FL completing primary and intermediate training at VT-10.  In November 2004 he reported to NS Norfolk and the “Greyhawks” of VAW-120 for initial training in the E-2C Hawkeye where he earned his Wings of Gold as a Naval Flight Officer in August 2005.   
Upon completion of training, he reported to the “Golden Hawks” of VAW-112 at Naval Base Ventura County Pt Mugu in February 2006.  He deployed in January 2007 with CARRIER AIR WING NINE onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.  Commander Sheridan served as the Training Officer and NATOPS Officer.  During his tour, Commander Sheridan graduated from the Navy Fighter Weapons School’s (TOPGUN) Air Intercept Control (AIC) course and the Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School’s (CAEWWS) Advanced Mission Commander Course.  He was selected as the 2008 Commander, Airborne Command & Control and Logistics Wing Naval Flight Officer of the Year (Sea). 
Invited to return to TOPGUN as an instructor, Commander Sheridan reported to the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) at NAS Fallon in December 2008.  There he served as the AIC Officer, editor of the NSAWC Journal and the United States Navy Subject Matter Expert on Command & Control.  During his tour, he graduated from the CAEWWS Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course.
Following his tour at TOPGUN, Commander Sheridan reported to the “Wallbangers” of VAW-117 in January 2012, where he served as the Training Officer and Quality Assurance Officer.  In April 2013, he deployed with CARRIER AIR WING ELEVEN onboard the USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) in support of FIFTH, SIXTH and SEVENTH Fleet operations.
Following the completion of the Aviation Safety Officer course, Command Sheridan reported to the “Black Eagles” of VAW-113 in August 2014 as a Department Head in the Safety, Administrative and Operations departments.  During his tour, he deployed with CARRIER AIR WING TWO onboard the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) in support of partner nations throughout South America. 
Upon completion of his tour with the “Black Eagles”, Commander Sheridan returned to NAS Fallon where he served as the Executive Officer of CAEWWS at the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center.  Commander Sheridan reported to “Sun Kings” of VAW-116 as Executive Officer in September 2019 and assumed command of in January 2021.
Commander Sheridan has accumulated over 2000 flight hours various aircraft to include the E-2C/D and FA-18D/F.  His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards), and various other awards and unit commendations.

Martin N. Fentress, Jr., a native of Norfolk, VA, graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 2000 with a B.A. in Economics.
